What is BLS CPR? This is a common question among nursing students, dental hygiene students, medical students, physical therapy program students, and any other student entering a healthcare related college program. BLS stands for Basic Life Support. BLS, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers, is a specialized CPR class for medical professionals.

For example, if you are a nursing student attending Aquinas School of Nursing, Vanderbilt School of Nursing, Belmont School of Nursing, Lipscomb School of Nursing, Middle Tennessee School of Nursing, NashvilleStateCommunity College – Nursing, or TennesseeStateUniversity, you will be required to become BLS certified prior to participating in your clinical experience. This does not only apply to nursing schools in Nashville, it applies to all college medical programs in all cities and states.

When a student is accepted into a professional medical program at a college, that student will be told they need to become BLS certified. This is required if the student will have onsite clinical experiences as part of their program. Be aware that the college wants a specific BLS certification card. The student cannot take any BLS class in Nashville. They require the student to take an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers class. This is important to know because there are several “online BLS classes”. These other companies that are not American Heart Association (AHA) training sites or training centers will not be able to provide students with the BLS certification card they will need to present to their nursing admissions advisor. These other companies that offer the BLS online class claim to base there curriculum on the American Heart Association guidelines, however once you complete their BLS class, you will not get an AHA BLS card.

Make sure that you do some research and take the correct BLS class that you need. The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers class teaches students, doctors, nurses, dentists, paramedics, EMTs, and many other healthcare professionals advanced techniques for CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In the BLS class students learn how to perform CPR on infants, children, and adults. Students also learn how to use and operate and AED (automated external defibrillator). There are advanced airway devices and ventilation devices that are introduced. In healthcare settings, students in clinical and professionals have access to more equipment to use during CPR than lay people in the community. Because of this, the BLS class for healthcare providers teaches CPR that specific to healthcare professionals.

CPR Nashville offers the American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Class, aka BLS Class. At the end of class each student is provided with their American Heart Association BLS card.
