What is it?

Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs brought on from bacteria or germs causing one or both of the lungs to become inflamed and full of pus or fluids.  It is also developed by other viruses or colds left untreated.  Pneumonia is a serious problem for infants 0-12 months who are just starting to develop their immune system and for people who are 65 years or older, where they have their immune system slowing down.  Other people who should be concerned about pneumonia are those to have other health problems already weakening their immune system.

 

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms include:

  • High fever
  • Chills
  • Cough with slime
  • Chest pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Headaches
  • Shortness of breath in regular activities

Some of these symptoms are often ignored, but you always want to make sure that if you have three or more of these symptoms, don’t be afraid to consult your doctor.  Pneumonia will only get worse if left untreated, and we all rather be safe than sorry!

 

How do you treat it?

First of all, see a doctor!  You always want to consult your doctor about any health-related problems you may have.  Once you see your doctor, he/she will determine what type of pneumonia you have.  He or she will then decide what type of medication you need and determine just how severe the case is.  Antibiotics prescribed by your doctor must then be taken throughout your treatment and even after you start feeling better or think the pneumonia is gone.  However, you’ll need plenty of rest and lots of water, so no school or work for a few days!

How to prevent pneumonia:

Always wash your hands!  Germs are so easy to spread, but soap and warm water go a long way.

You also want to get vaccinated to help your body make the antibodies for it.

Don’t smoke!  Smoking damages your lungs which makes it easier for the pneumonia to attack them.

Exercising and staying fit is another plus!  Doing daily activities helps your body stay strong and receive the nutrients it needs!

Lastly, always include your fruits and vegetables in your meals to help fight against bacteria!

Now that you know what pneumonia is, you can always keep a close watch on your symptoms to prevent pneumonia from happening!  Just keep a close eye on the infants and older adults for they are the ones with a major concern.  For the rest of you, as long as you eat healthy, get plenty of rest, and exercise, the symptoms you may be feeling could be a small cold.  However, if you ever experience chest pains, trouble breathing, or have a cough with a slimy substance; don’t hesitate to contact your doctor!  You also want to keep up with your annual physicals because, like pneumonia, most viruses and diseases could be avoided if you just stayed healthy and in contact with your doctor!
