CPR by a bystander | Chances of Survival?

Do you know how to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)? Do you know how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)? If not then you should sign up for a class soon and learn. The American Heart Association reports that annually 383,000 people are victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Even more alarming is that 88% of those 383,000 cardiac arrests happen at home. When someone is suffering from cardiac arrest immediate intervention is needed.

During cardiac arrest, the heart is not pumping and perfusing all of the vital organs and the brain with oxygenated blood like it normally does. Without a bystander or healthcare provider CPR to circulate the blood with chest compressions, the brain can be affected. Some victims who wait long enough for CPR have permanent brain damage as a result.

Another statistic that reiterates the importance of early bystander CPR the American Heart Association is that less than 8% of victims who experience cardiac arrest outside of a healthcare facility survive. But if the 88% of these out-of-hospital victims did receive CPR by a bystander their chance for survival following a cardiac arrest doubles and sometimes triples.

Currently, only 32% of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest receive bystander CPR. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone. It can happen to someone healthy, a loved one, a co-worker, a friend, and even as suddenly as when you are having a conversation with someone. The American Heart Association is trying to provide many different options for members of the community everywhere to learn how to do CPR.
